  • Although censorship is not the idea, news channels need to create a Lakshman Rekha

Submitted by ITV Production on Jul 24, 2009

MUMBAI: Most appreciated for her famous media campaign "Incredible India" which she launched during her previous tenure as minister of Tourism & Culture, Ambika Soni takes on her new role and shares her thoughts on the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and its need in a democratic country like India. "Ministry is required because there‘s no regulatory body or content code in India, the media is independent and Doordarshan & AIR are autonomous. The technology is getting advanced everyday."

When asked of what she thinks of the issue from the other angle as an audience, Mrs Soni replied, "A Lakshman rekha is required. We are copying western culture and a line needs to be drawn somewhere, we have received the same kind of feedback from the masses too."

Ambika Soni has been in the country‘s political arena since 1975 and knows how to play
hard the game that she is best known for. Currently serving in the Union Cabinet as the minister in charge of Information Technology, this iron lady politician gets on the hot seat in a candid chat with Swati Chaturvedi, the anchor of Zee News celebrity chat show Kahiye Janab.

"I agree the news in today‘s news channels is missing and serious news watchers still tune into Doordarshan news. Although censorship is not the idea, but a Lakshman Rekha is required", says I&B minister on the current content of news on various news channels in the country. She also expressed her vision on how the content on Doordarshan should be, "It should be imaginative, innovative and watch able".

Further delving into the topic Swati, the anchor asked Mrs Soni how she felt about people like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and opposition leader L.K Advani being in the same ministry. Ambika Soni replied with much excitement, "I‘m proud of this fact because Indira Gandhi has been my reason to enter politics. This gives me a sense of responsibility to live up to the expectation of this Ministry."

Taking a slight controversial twist the anchor probed Mrs Soni about her party members attacking her and saying that the ministry assigned to her is considered as unimportant. Mrs. Soni replied, "I did Atulya Bharat - Incredible India, while I was in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture?. which was also regarded as an unimportant Ministry. Incredible India was launched across the world. I did feel bad but then let people say what they want to, I will keep working."

Ambika Soni further added to her stand in the party & expressed her gratitude, "The party has given me a lot. Sonia has put me in the front league again and now its payback time to the party. I don‘t want to ask for anything more."

Don‘t miss the promising Information technology minister, Ambika Soni coming in full armoured thoughts & plans on her ministry and many more only on Zee News celebrity chat show Kahiye Janab this Saturday at 8:30 pm, 11th July 2009.
