  • Best of the best honoured at Gala Opening Night

    MUMBAI: At a glittering function at UB City in Bengaluru, the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 tonight honoured the outstanding performances by cricketers in domestic Twenty20 competitions from across the world over the past year.

    Significantly, just one of the award winners is not participating in the Airtel Champions League Twenty20.

    That award Highest Individual Score went to Hampshire?s Michael Lumb for his electrifying 124 runs against Essex, an innings which took just 69 balls.
    Also receiving awards tonight were Brad Hodge (most runs - cumulative), Anil Kumble (best bowling figures - match), Manish Pandey (best batting average ? season), Hamish Rutherford (best batting strike rate ? season), Samuel Badree (best bowling economy - season), Dirk Nannes (most wickets - cumulative) and Isura Udana (best bowling strike rate - season)

    Lalit Modi, Airtel Champions League Twenty20 Chairman, commenting on the new awards specific to Twenty20 cricket said: ?The performances by these cricketers have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide and added to the popularity of the game and a phenomenal increase in the fans following globally.     Diminutive Manish Pandey, of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, took the honours for the Best Batting Average with a tally of 168 runs at an average of 84. It was the 19-year-old Pandey?s heroics with Rahul Dravid in the IPL Semi Final that propelled the Royal Challengers Bangalore over the M.S. Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings.

    Hamish Rutherford of the Otago Volts won the award for the Best Batting Strike Rate (167.94 with an aggregate of 220 runs). Victorian Bushrangers and Kolkata Knight Riders right-handed batsmen Brad Hodge earned the distinction of bagging the Most Runs (cumulative) for the two teams with a total of 627 runs in the season.

    The Best Bowling Figures in a Match award was won by Indian spin legend and captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Anil Kumble, for his effort against the Rajasthan Royals during Season 2009 of the Indian Premier League in South Africa. Kumble led from the front with a fantastic spell of 5-5 that scuttled the Royals.

    The Best Bowling Strike Rate award went to Isura Udana of the Wayamba Elevens with a high strike rate of eight and a tally of 16 wickets, while the Best Bowling Economy in a Season was captured by Samuel Badree of Trinidad & Tobago with 4.33 runs. Victorian Bushranger and Delhi Daredevil Dirk Nannes won the Most Wickets Award for his 27 scalps in the IPL and Twenty20 Big Bash.

  • ATP Tour 500 - Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championship live on Ten Sports

    Mumbai, October 07:The ATP Tour is in the Land of the Rising Sun ? Japan, and it?s the start of the Asian Swing in the ATP Tennis world. This is the longest-running ATP World Tour tennis tournament in Asia, first held in 1973. The venue is the Ariake Tennis Forest Park with it?s centre court is the Ariake Colosseum.This is an enormous tennis centre consisting of 48 tennis courts and a stadium with one of the first retractable roofs in tennis. You can watch the matches live from Tokyo on Ten Sports

    This year tennis fans will be able to see some of the most exciting names in World tennis today, with the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro (ranked 5th in the world) Jo Wilfried Tsonga (ranked 7th ) and Giles Simon leading the field. The French flavour at this ATP 500 tournament is strong with Monfils joining Tsonga and Simon for the challenge. For Tsonga this will be his second visit, but for the other two, playing in this event would be a first.

    Defending champion Tomas Berdych, will look to claim the title in this edition. The 2008 win was the Czech?s first ATP title on Asian soil. Ranked 16th in the world, he will face a tough challenge from the other world class players in the field.

    This event marks the return of US Open champion Del Potro, to the ATP tour after winning the US Open. In 2008, Del Potro was the losing finalist, when Berdych took the title with a 6-1, 6-4 win.

    World No.1 Roger Federer will sadly miss the Asian Swing, as the doctors have recommended that he take a break from what has been a hectic history-making run, this season.

    2nd Wave is a series of in-depth interviews with some of the brightest CEO and group heads of companies, across sectors. The show analyzes how the companies have re-worked their strategies after a tough year and what are the opportunities that excite them? Most importantly the show gets them to lay out a wish list of what it will take for a 2nd wave of growth in India.
    Since its launch the show has made headlines. It was on this show that Future Group head Kishore Biyani first talked of the possibility of hiving off and even listing his popular retail chain Big Bazaar.
