Motorola set to acquire Swedish set-top box platform developer

MUMBAI: Motorola Inc. has reached the final stages of acquiring the Swedish IPTV equipment specialist Kreatel Communications AB. The companies expect to complete the deal by March end. The deal amount is yet to be disclosed.
Kreatel develops and manufactures set-top boxes (STB) for delivering digital TV over IP networks.
Kreatel develops a Linux-powered set-top box in addition to middleware used by service providers to deliver video services. The technology is used by providers in Spain, Sweden and The Netherlands.
Motorola has already established itself well in the market, offering a range of STBs for cable TV services. However, acquiring Kreatel will help it to address the growing number of telecommunications operators using IPTV technology to deliver video signals over DSL connections.
