ESS files FIR against Asianet's franchise

MUMBAI: ESPN Software India has filed an FIR against Mr. Pradeep.P representing Varnam Cable Network based out of Konni, who is distributing signals of Asianet Satellite Communications in Kalanjoor, Koodal, Koduman, Konni, Vakayar, Vkottayam, Kizhavalloor, Mallassery, Malayalapuzha, Chittormukku, Aiyravan areas in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, under Indian Copy right Act 1957 Sec 37,51,8/w 63 and 65.

According to the FIR, Varnam Cable Network has illegally broadcast the signals of Star Cricket channel using a personal DTH set top box without authorised agreement or copyright. The piracy has been happening since 21 July 2011. This has led to huge financial loss for ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd.

ESPN Software India senior director affiliate sales Rajib Mukherjee said, "The franchise/ link operators of Asianet across the state are unable to handle the pressure as consumers across the state are keen to watch the on-going India England Test series. This leads to some of them succumbing to the lure of piracy. The MSO in question Asianet has, however, chosen to ignore the demands of people and continues to switch off signals of ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket.
