Twitter plans to snap up Tweetdeck with $50 million bid

MUMBAI: Micro-blogging site Twitter is in advanced negotiations to buy out UK-based Tweetdeck for $50 million, a move aimed at stemming competition.

Tweetdeck has over 10 per cent market share in of tweets.

Twitter has bettered UberMedia’s bid of $30 million for Tweetdeck, hoping that the purchase would help it strengthen its hold over the social media market.

Twitter is also concerned about the growth of Tweetdeck, which recently launched TweetDck Web Beta. This is a web-based version similar to Twitter and is available on all browsers and doesn’t require a download.

There is a strong possibility that the gate will open for other bidders who want a slice of Tweetdeck to grow their market share.

Last year, Twitter acquired Tweetie, the most popular iPhone application. It renamed it ‘Twitter for iPhone’ and made it free.
