  • Get inspired with the Spirit and Courage that makes an ordinary man a Hero this October only on PIX

Submitted by ITV Production on Sep 26, 2007

MUMBAI: One daydream that almost all of us have is to be a hero. The heroes of our daydreams vary; as we grow, our ideas of heroes develop and evolve from the mere swashbuckling, sword wielding, dragon slayer to the hero that resides in almost all of us - the hero that rises in times of crisis and when the going gets really tough. This October get ready to be inspired by some real Heroes only on PIX.

PIX every Monday on Perfect 10 pays homage to human courage that makes certain people stand apart from the crowd.

Take the example of Jane Fonda and James Cann in Comes a Horseman, who play hardened ranchers with easy-going outward appearances, but strong emotions fine tuned through a rugged life of hard work or watch the intersecting lives of the occupants of an old apartment block in City of Hope as commercial city developers try to evict them and they do their best to survive - both within and outside of legality.

Barabbas inspires you with an epic account of the thief Barabbas, played by Anthony Quinn, who was spared crucifixion when the Jews chose Christ in his place. The film takes you through his many ordeals as he confronts his inner demons. Scorpio is a lethal game of hide-and-seek between two assassins that leaves you wondering as to who the real hero truly is and what his true motives are. Lastly The Winslow Boy is a truly inspiring tale of a father who risks fortune, health, domestic peace and a daughter‘s prospects to pursue justice for his falsely accused son.

One quality that always arises when discussing heroes is courage and valor of the heart. Catch these touching tales as PIX pays a tribute to world cinema, every Sunday in October at 8 pm. Starting with the brilliant French comedy film La Cage aux Folles on October 7 which makes an effort to address the underlying theme of gay relationships and the courage required to live life on one‘s terms. Ishtar on October 14 is the touching and heartfelt tale of two friends, backed by the genius acting skills of Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman, who are trying to make it in the cold, harsh, cutthroat world of music and entertainment, with only each other to depend on.

Another great heroic tale being aired on PIX on October 21 is Khartoum nominated for the Oscars in 1967; this film based on historical events is replete with exciting battle sequences, great performances and a truly stirring story.

Sometimes an individual who heeds a more unusual call, but who follows that call with total dedication is also called a hero. It is the talent or the struggle to express that talent that makes the individual a hero and often a legend. On Sunday, October 28 at 8 pm catch the biography of Charlie Chaplin, filmmaker extraordinaire in Chaplin. The movie, laced with self-deprecating humor and self-reflection on the artistic temperament takes us through Chaplin‘s formative years in England to his highest successes in America, his life, work and loves.

But what‘s heroism without humor! PIX brings you some undiluted comedies this month on Great at 8 starting with Baby Sitters Club on October 22; watch this brilliant film based on the bestselling book series by Ann Martin, about seven 13 year old friends whose babysitting business leads to one adventure after another. This is followed by The Bikini Shop, on October 23 - the story of two fresh graduates who are trying to make a go of the failing Bikini shop they have inherited from an aunt.

On October 24 catch Peter Sellers as he saves the world and all life as a mad US General tries to trigger a nuclear war in Dr. Strangelove. Dr. Strangelove is a heroic film replete with loads of humour while making fun of the whole Cold War situation in the ‘60‘s. To conclude the comedy week on October 25 is the film ‘Eddie‘ - Watch Whoopi Goldberg aka Eddie a New York limo driver and a fanatical follower of the New York Knicks, dream come true when she wins a contest to be the Honoury coach of the team. The movie is a hilarious narration of how Eddie turns around the prima donnas of the team into a success.

In the often impassioned worlds of religion and politics, it is simple to find people who have consciously dedicated their entire lives to a cause - one such man is Spike Lee. Lee was first underground black director to challenge the Hollywood studio stereotype and yet make it big in the industry. Catch two of Lee‘s most acclaimed movies on Thursday October 11 and 18 on Perfect 10 as he makes bold political statements about racial politics in post-apartheid America with Get on the Bus and School Daze. "October is a celebration of the triumph of the human spirit; the films celebrate the lives of some very extraordinary people - extraordinary because they damn well did not buckle under pressure but went on to change their destinies", adds Gitanjali Murari, Programming Head, PIX.

Moving on from heroes in life to the heroes on screen catch all new episodes of Inside the Actors Studio as Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. discuss their journey as actor with James Lipton every Sunday in October at 7 pm only on PIX.
