MUMBAI: Action resumes in the world?s most exciting club competition in football on August 19 with the beginning of the playoff stage. In what is being billed as the ?Battle of Britain? Arsenal take on Celtic. The Gunners, who reached the semi-final last year, will be the favourites to go through. The packed Spyro Louis Stadium in Athens will be the venue of another eagerly awaited clash as Greek club Panathinaikos hope to make use of the home advantage against Atletico Madrid. In other matches, Lyon, who over the years have consistently made the quarter-finals of the competition play Belgian league runners-up club Anderlecht. Lyon have begun the season with a 2-2 draw against Le Mans with a last minute free kick from Lisandro saving the day for them. Claude Puel‘s will be under pressure to prove his transfer spending worth around 70 million euros was worthwhile, and the decision to sell Karim Benzema was a wise move.
In another tie, Sporting Lisbon, who finished runners-up to Porto in the Portuguese league last season, will face Serie A side Fiorentina. Fiorentina had finished 4th in Serie A last season. All eyes will be on the Italian Club?s new signings Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni who have both been included in the squad.
