  • Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand - Live on Ten Sports

Submitted by ITV Production on Aug 17, 2009

MUMBAI: Sri Lanka will look to maintain their impressive record under new captain Kumar Sangakkara when they take on New Zealand in a 2 match Test series beginning on August 18. And all the action will be Live on Ten Sports (see schedule below).

Sangakkara took over from Mahela Jayawardene for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament where his team reached the final. He followed this up with victories over Pakistan in the Test and the one-day series.

His counterpart, New Zealand?s Daniel Vettori admitted his team has not played a lot of Test cricket which makes them the underdogs. Kiwis are a young side with their 30-year-old captain being the most experienced player in the side with 92 Test matches. ?This team has the talent to succeed. We have to just get some performances under our belt," said the New Zealand captain.

The visitors, who last played Test cricket in April, when they hosted India, practiced indoors before their arrival due to the New Zealand winter. They have played 2 warm-up games in Sri Lanka in a bid to get familiar with the conditions.

Vettori has set rather modest targets for his team. The last time New Zealand toured Sri Lanka in 2003 the series was drawn 0-0. ?I think last time there were some outstanding batting performances and we hope to match those this time as well. To start with a drawn Test series will be a positive result, and anything above that will be a bonus," he said.

The return of off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan will give Sri Lanka even more confidence. The world?s most successful Test bowler will be back after missing the 3 Test series against Pakistan due to injury. The 37-year-old wants to retire after the November 2010 series against West Indies. The decision has the skipper?s support. "As a captain I want him to continue for the next 10 years but I feel it is a very sensible call on his part. He has 7 more games to go before he retires from Tests and I expect him to be our trump player for the Test series against New Zealand."

New Zealand have recruited former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as a consultant and hope his advice will help them tackle their problems with spin bowling. However, Vettori feels it will be a mistake to focus only on Murali, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath. "Spin will obviously play an important part but from what I saw during the Pakistan series seamers also played an important part. So our ability to counter the Sri Lankan new ball bowlers is going to play a crucial role in the outcome of this series," he says.

The first Test will be played at Galle from August 18th to 22nd. This will be followed by a Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo from August 26 to 30.
